COMPENSATION RANGE $65,000-$80,000 (commensurate with experience)

POSITION SUMMARY:
This position will be responsible for supervising the scientific operations of the laboratory including overseeing general laboratory safety, laboratory personnel, maintaining and improving workflow, working with the laboratory coordinator to prioritize testing and ensuring compliance with accreditations/licensing/regulations. The Laboratory Manager also collaborates with analysts to support ongoing projects and contribute to the development of new analytical testing initiatives.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES & ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Operational Management
- Oversee daily lab operations to ensure a productive and efficient work environment
- Develop and implement standard operating procedures (SOPs) for lab activities
- Ensure the maintenance and calibration of lab equipment
- Establish and enforce quality control procedures to ensure accuracy and precision of test results
- Perform other duties as required
- Collaborate with the Training Coordinator to ensure staff are effectively trained and proficiency is properly assessed prior to conducting unsupervised activities
- Collaborate with the Laboratory Coordinator to schedule and assign tasks to ensure optimal use of resources
- Collaborate with the Inventory Specialist to ensure there is supply redundancy and the most cost-effective consumable sourcing is selected
- Foster a collaborative and positive work environment
- Conduct regular meetings to gather employee feedback
- Review team member performance and assist with the probationary review and annual reviews of the team
- Assist with handling any conflicts within the team in collaboration with the Quality and Research Manager and HR
- Identify opportunities for process improvements and drive initiatives to enhance laboratory efficiency and accuracy
- Lead root cause analysis and corrective/preventive action (CAPA) processes
- Collaborate with the maintenance team to ensure all laboratory equipment and instruments are properly calibrated and maintained
- Negotiate current employees’ job responsibilities and manage their time to achieve project goals
- Maintain accurate and complete records of laboratory activities, including test results, equipment calibration, and corrective actions
- Review and approve Work Orders, data, and reports
- Assist researchers in designing and executing experiments
- Provide technical support and troubleshooting for lab equipment and procedures
- Coordinate internal resources and third parties/vendors for project execution
- Ensure that all projects are delivered on-time, within scope of accreditations/licensing/regulations and within budget
- Developing project scopes and objectives, involving all relevant stakeholders and ensuring technical feasibility
- Communicate project related issues to stakeholders as well as senior management
- Ensure resource availability and allocation
- Develop a detailed project plan to track progress
- Measure project performance using appropriate systems, tools and techniques
- Monitor and manage risks throughout the project lifecycle
- Ensure optimal utilization of personnel and materials
- Budget and cost control: Track project expenses and ensure cost control measures are in place
- Create and maintain comprehensive project documentation
- Ensure the lab complies with all health and safety regulations and accreditations/licensing/regulatory standards
- Provide training and guidance to laboratory staff on quality procedures and accreditations/licensing/regulations (Health Canada, ISO 9001, ISO 17025)
- Promote a culture of quality and accountability throughout the laboratory
- Plan and conduct internal audits to assess compliance and identify areas for improvement
- Coordinate responsibilities to findings from regulatory inspections
- Develop, implement, and maintain a comprehensive QMS in accordance with ISO 9001 standards
- Ensure all laboratory processes and procedures align with ISO 9001 requirements
- Monitor and improve the effectiveness of the systems through regular audits and assessments
Regulatory:
- Strong knowledge of ISO 9001 standards and quality management principles
- Strong knowledge of Health Canada and ISO 17025
- Master’s or Ph.D degree in a relevant scientific field (e.g., Chemistry, Biochemistry or Biology)
- Certification in quality management is an asset
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in a research lab, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or management role
- Publication in a scientific journal as first or second author
- Experience with lab equipment maintenance and troubleshooting
- Experience in the field of quality assurance and quality control within an analytical laboratory setting
- Experience with laboratory instrumentation and analytical techniques
- Strong organizational and time management skills
- Proficiency in data management and analysis software
- Knowledge of safety and regulatory standards in a research setting

- Should be comfortable wearing appropriate PPE, such as lab coats, gloves, safety glasses, and respirators when necessary
- Proper handling of chemicals and adherence to safety protocols
- Working with biohazardous materials and hazardous chemicals
